Unlike the Venus, Olympia is not an idealised beauty. Her face is plain and ordinary lacking great feminine beauty and her hand forcefully covers her genitalia most uninviting manor. The animal in the picture is not a sleeping dog, but instead an arching frightened black cat. Not only is the cat a symbol of independence but also shows that the cat is uneasy with the viewer, this represents that Olympia has an intruding client.
